Bottom Line: Nice shady playground with bathroom on site. Adjacent to large park with trails and nature center 4/5 stars.
The Review:
Potomac Overlook park is a wonderful regional park with 70 acres of woodland, trails, educational gardens, a small picnic area and a Nature Center. This review, however, focuses on the playground located by the parking lot for the park.
The playground features one main play structure, made out of cedar logs, evoking a woodsy natural feel.
It has one high slide, and a double slide that is a little lower. The tall slide is pretty fast– my 4 year old loved it, but smaller kids would need supervision on it.
The opposite side of the structure has a climbing wall.
Underneath and within are open space for free play – it feels much like playing in a tree fort.
The recommended age range is 2-12, but littler ones definitely need watching on the structure.
There is also a little alcove created by wooden planks where kids can use sidewalk chalk, if there happens to be any in the bin.
There is a cute kid-sized table made of natural materials with a tic-tac-toe board painted on it’s tabletop.
There are also two pieces of exercise equipment in the playground area which seem out of place. Kids are of course drawn to them, and yet they are meant for ages 13 and older.
Next to the playground is a large covered pavilion, which can be reserved for parties.
There are bathrooms on the back side of the pavilion, which is quite convenient.
Marcy Road Park is adjacent to Potomac Overlook and has three tennis courts and a basketball court.
From the parking lot and playground, there is a paved road that leads down to the nature center.
The nature center is wonderful as well, but deserves its own post.
The only negatives to this park, in my opinion are: no swings, and no fencing. Otherwise, it is a wonderfully shady park set in a lovely location, with the bonus of bathrooms on site!
