Bottom Line: Nice, sunny park located in the Arlington Ridge/Crystal City area. Better suited for preschoolers than toddlers and babies. No bathrooms or water. 3/5 stars.
The Review:
Nelly Custis park is the “sister” park to Nina Park. I made that up, I have no idea if anyone else calls them that. But the two parks are just a block apart and Nina is better suited to littler kids, whereas Nelly C is better for older kids.
Nelly Custis is a fairly large park, given the urban density of the neighborhood. It is just one block off of S 23rd St. and features two pieces of play equipment and a large open grassy space.
Play Structure
This is your typical preschool-aged play structure. It has a couple of low slides, a fireman’s pole, and monkey bars. There is nothing extraordinary about it and it sits in full sun. It does have a ramp leading up to the main platform, making it wheelchair accessible.
Swings
There are four regular swings, but no baby/bucket swings.
The playground area is set in mulch, with one stretch of rubber surface running across the middle. Surrounding the play area is a paved sidewalk, making a nice circular flat surface for ride on toys. There are some benches and picnic tables on the perimeter that enjoy shade from the trees.
The park runs along the length of 24th St with a large grassy open space. It is fully fenced, providing kids a safe area to run free.
While the park doesn’t offer a lot in terms of fancy features or amenities (no bathrooms or water on site), it is a busy and popular neighborhood playground. We found it to be a nice reward after a successful shopping run at the nearby Costco in Pentagon City.
