WFMW: DIY Foaming Handsoap

Wednesday May 6, 2009

This week’s Works For Me Wednesday is recession-inspired and frugally focused.

My tip relates to foaming hand soap.  I love the Method brand.

It’s “green”, it’s attractive and it’s reasonably affordable.   However, it’s neither green nor affordable if you have to buy a new pump every time it runs out.

Method sells larger refill packs*, but they don’t come with the foaming hand soap.

Finally, I clued on what exactly makes foaming soap foam.  It takes three things:

1) A “foaming” pump

2) 10% regular soap

3) 90% WATER!!

So,  take your existing foaming pump dispenser, fill it up just a little ways with soap.  Then fill it the rest of the way water, and gently shake to mix the two.  Voila, foaming soap at a fraction of the cost!

You may have to play with your ratio to get the desired amount of foam.  You can look at the ratio marked on this P@mpered Chef dispenser to get an idea:

*For even greater savings, buy the jumbo refill pack at Costco.

I have been doing this for a while. I use whatever I have around for the “soap” part. I have a ton of body wash that I’ve gotten cheap, so I typically use that. I’ve also used dish soap, shampoo and even some bubble bath. (The bubble bath was already watered down some, so I have to use a little more.)

I like to buy the foaming handsoaps from Bath and Body works and then reuse the containers when they’re empty. I make my own too, but I use Shaklee’s dish soap 🙂 Works great!

I found this out when I started buying Pampers Kandoo soap pumps. I couldn;t believe how simple it was! My soap refill bottle is gonna last forever at this rate.

That’s what I do with a used foaming soap dispenser and liquid hand soap from Walmart. Works great! I really like the foaming soap.
