If you’re like us, you probably added a few electronic doodads to your home this Christmas.
If you’re smart, you’ll label them now, before you forget what the heck they are for.
Over the summer, I got fed up with the random cords to random chargers and things I would find lying around my house. So I went around and identified, as best I could, what went to what and wrote it on a piece of masking tape and put it around the cord. The cords I couldn’t identify, went into a bag — if I don’t figure out what they are good for, at some point, I’ll toss them (I should probably set a time limit for this step, but the packrat in me is afraid to commit).
Even as I was writing this post, I stumbled onto another cord that I wasn’t sure about and had to quickly id it before I forgot.
This post inspired by the Works for Me Wednesday series held at Rocks In My Dryer.
That’s totally my predicament. I have a boxful of wires I just stuffed together. And I can’t figure out what wires are for what. Once, I threw away a firewire cable that I thought was useless… only to discover later that it was for my external harddrive. I had to buy the entire harddrive casing so that I could get my data out. AHH!
I think I better go take your suggestion and get my wires sorted out… when I have the mood… which can be in 2011.
Yes, I have begun to do this, too. If only I had started to do it sooner! We have drawers full of cords, and I have no clue what they belong to. Some of the devices have been long discarded, I’m sure, but I still have the cord! This tip takes only seconds to do, but saves so much time and frustration later! Good tip!
Oh wow. You mean, there’s a better way than shoving all the cords in random boxes only to be frustrated when you can’t find the exact one you need at the moment? 🙂 Awesome idea.
Oh my gosh! I have such a problem with this! Thanks for the great idea…I always think that I’ll remember what goes with what!
Good for you! I need to do this as well. I’ve labeled about 2-3 cords, that’s it.
