New Year, Same Old Thing

Sunday January 4, 2009

Every year, for the past I-don’t-know-how-many-years, we’ve gotten together with friends at a cabin in Front Royal over New Years.  The cabin is owned by a kind family called the Orrisons, who generously share it with our group.  I’ve been going to “Orrisons” since I was in college with Randy & Kim and it’s been fun to continue the tradition now that we have kids.

The cabin is small and rustic.  It has 2 small bedrooms and a loft for sleeping.  The only source of heat is a pot-bellied wood-burning stove, and the sole bathroom is … adequate.  The “thermostat” can be tricky to regulate.  Generally, we all freeze for the first 30 minutes or so, until the heat gets going, then the temperature stays in the “sweltering” range until about 2 or 3am when the fire dwindles and it starts to get cold again.

We’ve had larger crowds, but this year we were comfortable and cozy with 7 adults, 4 kids (including two babies), and 4 dogs.  Yes, that was a small group for us 🙂

Despite the lack of some modern conveniences (phones, cell service, tv and internet) we always have a great time.  We also did quite well with the modern conveniences we brought with us.  Jeremy’s laptop served as the official Yahtzee scorecard, with his fancy tricked out spreadsheet.  And Liv brought a projector and sheet, allowing us to watch Hancock on the “big screen” (the general consensus was “thumbs up” to the movie).

This year was largely a “do nothing” kind of trip.  We slept, ate, and played games.  This trip is one of my few chances to play games for hours, since playing games is not… shall we say… Mike’s love language.   Randy and others love games, or are at least willing to endulge me, so we played Casino, Speed Scrabble, Boggle and Yahtzee.  And of course, we continued our New Years tradition of having a “white elephant” exchange which involves re-gifting something random, along with a $10 giftcard of the givers choice.

Great family shot! Front Royal is beautiful even in the winter. It sounds like a fun time for you. Chris is like Mike in the sense that he doesn’t enjoy games (he loves computer games but strongly dislikes all the games I like).
