Bottom Line: A really fun sprayground. Spray area is in full sun, some shady seating adjacent. Bathrooms and parking on site, along with a tot lot and more. 5/5 stars.
Note: this post focuses solely on the sprayground, which opened June 2013. See my other post for a review of the rest of Virginia Highlands Park.
Virginia Highlands Sprayground is open from 10a -8pm daily, from Memorial Day thru Labor Day.
It took me way too long, but we finally made it to Virginia Highlands park to check out the new sprayground, which opened in June 2013.
The sprayground is adjacent to the tot lot – just across the parking lot from the Aurora Hills Rec Center and Library. It features a typical array of fountains, dumping buckets and various spraying elements.
This sprayer had a neat design. It would shoot out a spray and could rotate 360º. But when it rotated so that it was facing outside the spray area (towards the benches), the spray would cut off, keeping caregivers dry.
A friend told me that when the park first opened, the surface was quite slick and kids fell easily. They seem to have corrected this although water shoes are still recommended by the county, but not required (my kids, and most others, went barefoot).
The spray area sits in full sun, although there is some morning shade for the benches and tables on the parking lot side of the sprayground.
The spray area is partially fenced. Access to the parking lot is gated, but the rest of the park is open from the spray area, meaning lots of room for little runners to take off.
There is a foot sprayer at the entrance to the sprayground. A water fountain and bathrooms can be found on the far side of the tot lot adjacent to the sprayground. (You can see the bathroom building in the title picture at the top of this post).
Some of Arlington’s spray parks have funky hours, but the Virginia Highlands spray park is open daily from 10am – 8pm, Memorial Day thru Labor Day. The sprayground was designed to treat and recirculate the water, unlike some of the older spraygrounds.
