The weather got hot this last week of May, so Adam and I decided to head out to Fairfax to cool off in the Fairfax Corner interactive water fountain. It’s located in front of the Rave Cinema (formerly Cinema de Lux), in the central plaza of this outdoor town center.
There were plenty of kids out enjoying the fountain — primarily preschool-aged and younger as area schools are still in session, but it was not overly crowded.
Kids had fun waiting for the water to start up again.
Thankfully, it starts with small sprays and builds up so no one got a geyser up the nose. Adam wasn’t too sure about the spray at first, but he soon loved it as much as everyone else.
Eventually, the fountain does work up to a pretty powerful spray.
I thought Adam was loving it, until I realized he was trapped in the middle and afraid to come out.
He was a bit traumatized by the 10 or so seconds he was stuck in the middle, but he eventually ventured back in.
The plaza has tables with shade umbrellas and benches along the side. There is some shade from the umbrellas and surrounding trees, but the fountain itself gets full sun.
You can pack your own lunch or take advantage of the many dining options at Fairfax Corner. Casual fare includes: Chipotle, Potbelly Sandwich Works, Fanfare Eatery, Carribou Coffee, Ben & Jerry’s, Pinkberry, and Cupcakes Actually. For sit down service, there’s California Pizza Kitchen, Coastal Flats, PF Changs, Ozzie’s, Uncle Julio’s, and Ruth Chris.
In addition to the spray fountain, a mini train is available for rides around the plaza.
The Fairfax Corner Express operates from May 1, 2012 through September 30, 2012, during the following hours, weather permitting:
Monday – Thursday: 11:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Friday – Saturday: 10:30 a.m. – 10:30 p.m.
Sunday: 10:30 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.
It costs $3/pp to ride.
Fairfax Corner also hosts a variety of free concerts and children’s entertainment throughout the summer on this raised “stage” opposite the fountain.
Their Little Tots program features entertainers like Mad Science and the Great Zucchini on select Wednesday mornings at 10:30am. They also have kids music scheduled on alternating Wednesday evenings at 6pm. Additionally, live music is scheduled for every Thursday evening at 6:30pm from June 14 – August 23.
Here’s the 2012 line-up:
Fairfax Corner makes for a fun summer destination, especially if you take advantage of their kids programming. Just be sure to lather up on the sunscreen and expect a crowd on days with events scheduled. Also, moms with runners should note that the area is not fenced and keep a sharp eye that kids don’t wander into the street.
