Merry Christmas!
I used to always send a newsletter with my Christmas cards, but it felt somewhat redundant, since our life is on display in the blog. But it’s always nice to do a year end review, especially for those who don’t regularly visit. So here’s our re-cap of 2009. It’s been filled with highs and lows, but through it all, we have seen that God is good.
Here’s the skinny on everyone:
Mike – continues to enjoy his work at NFCU. While his work is enjoyable, his golden handcuffs are tied to the fitness center at work. He has become a Crossfit fanatic evangelist enthusiast. He works out regularly with a group of guys during lunch, has started teaching a class one morning a week, AND has started a Saturday morning workout with some neighborhood guys. He is pursuing the possibility of doing some personal training in 2010 – if you want to learn what it means to “forge elite fitness” – he’s would love to show you! In addition to being a stud muffin, he is still rocking his role as SuperDad – his many talents include building paper airplanes, herding cats as an AWANA leader, and packing the dreaded school lunches.
Kendra – I am enjoying my life as a stay-at-home mom, even though I often feel like a drill sergeant (getting everyone dressed and out the door on time is a daily challenge!) and a chauffeur as I schlep the kids around. It took a while to get a handle on everyone’s busy schedules, but now I am used to the daily routine. I have scaled back from some of my past commitments but still enjoy my mom’s group at Cherrydale and coordinating socials for the ladies in my neighborhood. When I’m not changing diapers or feeding the hungry masses, I can be found spending (too much) time on on Facebook or this blog.
Wesley – our beautiful six year old girl! It’s hard to believe how fast it’s gone by. She is enjoying kindergarten at our local public school and I have enjoyed volunteering in her class. She loves to draw, color, and is eager to learn. Of course if you ask her, her favorite subject is recess. It’s been interesting to observe that her tightest friendships have been with some of the boys, moreso than the girls. We’ll have to keep an eye on her in her teen years! She continues to be a fun, silly little lady who is a joy to see grow and mature. She is a great helper with a sweet heart and loves to “look after” her brothers.
Silas – Silas turned four this summer and is enjoying his second year of preschool. He can’t wait to follow Wesley’s footsteps onto the school bus next fall. He continues to be a strong-willed and challenging child, but I know God is using these qualities to shape both his character and ours (Mike & I). Despite our daily struggles, he is full of tender moments which melt my heart. He is sharp and clever and I love seeing how his mind works. I suspect he will grow up to be an engineer of some sort, if he and I can survive his early years :).
Asher – Asher is on the cusp of turning two in January. His name means “Happy” and he most certainly is … unless he’s having a terrible two moment. Then he does his best to throw the biggest fit he can pitch. It would be impressive if we hadn’t already gone through worse with the other brother. Fortunately, his tantrums are short-lived and his impish smile and giggle are much more commonly seen. He is such a cutie – it’s a good thing, because he is so busy and gets into everything before I can turn my back. He wears me out, but the joy he brings our family is immeasurable.
Logan – what can I say about our dear ole dawg? He turned eight this spring. We celebrated with cake, which he enjoyed more than I anticipated. He’s showing a lot of gray. He gets too little exercise and barely enough love, but is pretty content to hang out on the couch.
Seasonally speaking, here’s the rundown of other noteworthy events from the year. Follow the links for more details:
- In January: we rang in the New Year with another trip to “Orrisons” and celebrated when Asher turned one.
- In February: we got a snow day, Asher showed off his walking skills, Wesley & Silas show they really are good buddies and Silas makes his case for Fruity Pebbles.
- In March: we got a little more snow, we celebrated Valentine’s Day, and took a trip to visit Grandma & Grandpa. Also, I interviewed Wesley & Silas about motherhood and forced them to eat Mac ‘n Cheese.
- In April: we attended a number of Easter egg hunts, including the Mac Daddy. We also celebrated Easter, of course, and the kids and I took a road trip to Richmond over Spring Break. We also took our first foray into organized sports, namely soccer.
- May was a big month with many milestones. The kids school activities wound down: AWANA, soccer, ballet, and preschool. We had an eventful Memorial Weekend and Mike and I celebrated our 11th wedding anniversary with a fabu weekend at the Gaylord. Most significantly, my mom ended her 4 year battle with ovarian cancer, going home to be with Jesus on May 28th. It was hard to say good-bye to her and I still miss her dearly.
- June and July were filled with as many activities as I could think of to get us out of the house: swimming lessons, Vacation Bible School, theater camp, and a few trips to “our farm” to pick produce. We celebrated Silas’ 4th birthday with a race car party. We also went down to visit the Grands over 4th of July weekend, stopping off to check out the Natural Bridge.
- August was our big vacation month. We made our annual camping trip to Buggs Island with friends, then headed north for a New England vacation (click to read days 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7). We spent a wonderful time in New Hampshire and Maine. In addition to all this fun, we also found time to visit Kings Dominion and get a really bad haircut.
- September arrived before we knew it and we found ourselves racing to make it to the bus stop each morning. My life became a blur of getting kids to their various activities and attempting to get anything done before it was time to pick them up again. In October, I enjoyed a little staycation while they visited the Grands – it was a nice sanity restorer. The rest of the month was full of the usual fall fun: Cox Farms, carving pumpkins, Halloween parties, etc. The kids also took ice skating lessons for the first time and had fun being on the ice.
- November marked the beginning of the birthday season. Mike had his, and then Wesley had hers later in the month. We celebrated with a paint-your-own pottery party. Thanksgiving was celebrated with the Grands and then all of the sudden, it was December! Somebody else got older, we decked the halls, had a little snow, then a whole lotta snow. Suddenly, Christmas is here and I am scrambling to keep the house in order, bake too much stuff and cram as many “meaningful” activities in as we can handle.
That’s basically it for 2009. If you managed to read all that, you deserve a medal! Since we’re in a recession, will you settle for a virtual Christmas card?
It is our prayer that your hearts are filled with the joy and peace that comes from the one who was born to save us all.
Merry Christmas from our clan to yours!

YOu did better than I did. I wrote a whole post about NOT writing a Christmas letter and then proceeded to… not write a Christmas letter. :-)
