With the NFL playoffs in full effect, I’ve been craving chicken wings. Unfortunately, my Paleo challenge doesn’t allow for deep frying like we used to do, so I went looking for a Paleo recipe to bake them in the oven. Here are the two I found and tried.
#1 Sweet & Sassy Wings
From Fast Paleo: http://fastpaleo.com/sweet-n-sassy-chicken-wings/
- 12 Chicken Wings
- 1/3 Cup Spicy Brown Mustard
- 1/4 Cup Honey
- 2 Tablespoons Fresh Grated Ginger (I subbed 2 tsp. ground ginger)
- 2 Tablespoons Grapeseed Oil
Combine spices and oil in a plastic bag, mixing to combine. Then add wings. Bake at 425 for 20 minutes, flipping wings halfway through.
Verdict: They tasted great but didn’t have any zing to them. Now that I think about it, I did use regular deli mustard, but not spicy mustard. Maybe next time I’ll add some Frank’s Hot Sauce.
#2 Indian Spiced Chicken Wings
I got this recipe from Paleo Hacks: http://paleohacks.com/questions/33560/whats-your-favorite-chicken-wing-recipe
- 12 Chicken Wings
- 1 tsp. cumin
- 1 tsp. curry
- 1 tsp.paprika
- 2/3 tsp. turmeric
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (or more for more spice)
- 2 Tbsp healthy oil
I combined all of the spices and oil into a plastic bag and mixed to combine. Then I added the wings and let them marinate for a bit (~1 hr in my case) then baked at 425 for 20 minutes, flipping the wings at the halfway point.
Verdict: the flavor was interesting, but not at all hot and not what I think of when I think chicken wings. I probably would try a different spice combination next time.
