My Weekend at Tony Blauer’s Tactical Combatives Camp

This past weekend, Mike & I — along with 150+ other folks — attended Tony Blauer’s annual “Tactical Combatives Camp”, hosted at our gym, Crossfit Rubicon.

If you are wondering who the heck Tony Blauer is and why in the world a regular ole mom like me would want to attend a “Combatives” camp, I’ll do my best to explain.

Tony Blauer is a highly regarded personal defense & combatives consultant.  He has over twenty years experience researching and developing close quarter tactics & scenario-based training for law enforcement, military and professional self-defense instructors.  His methodology, known as the S.P.E.A.R. system, taps into our instinctive survival nature and gives individuals a toolkit to protect themselves in conflict.

There are obvious applications to this kind of training to those who regularly expect to encounter trouble/physical conflict — namely law enforcement, military, and martial artists.  But what does this stuff have to do with a plain jane momma like me?

(Please note the nature of this post/summation of Tony’s training is from the perspective of a regular joe like me and doesn’t do justice to all of his teachings across all of those backgrounds).

While the world I live in is largely safe and benign, the threat of danger is still out there.  The recent shootings in Colorado and Wisconsin are painful reminders of that.  Although admittedly, the  likelihood of a terrorist plot or mass-shooting incident is pretty small.

But the possibility of violence or intent to harm by some random bad guy, or a family member/known individual is, sadly, a much more realistic scenario.   Here in Arlington, VA, there have been accounts of a rape on the bike trail and a man who murdered his wife, all in the last month and a half.

So, developing some tools to defend yourself in the case of unexpected danger is a good thing, no matter who you are.   And that is just what this weekend was all about.   We spent time listening to Tony, lecture style.  There were also demonstrations that brought his principles to life.

And then we got to participate in drills ourselves, practicing the concepts that could save our lives.

Rather than try and explain all of Tony’s teachings here, I will just say that it was intuitive, practical and powerful.   I came away from the weekend with the feeling that if, God forbid, I found myself in a dangerous situation, I have the ability to defend and protect myself and my family and I will NOT be a helpless victim.

In addition to all of Tony’s great teachings, we got to hear from some big names in the Crossfit community.  Jeremy Kinnick, a Crossfit Games athlete and super nice guy, was on hand to help instruct and share how Tony’s teaching has impacted his life and coaching.

Zack Even-Esh, a well known Crossfit coach/expert in all things old school strength, shared his story and put us through our paces with a mini Crossfit-style WOD.

I also got to meet lots of great people, Crossfitters and regular folk from all over the area, country, even the world! It was a superlative weekend and I’m so glad I got to attend.

If you ever have the chance to attend one of Tony’s or any of the Blauer Tactical Systems training courses — I HIGHLY recommend you do so.  Not only will it change your life, it could save it!
