Tis the Season

Tuesday December 13, 2011

December always seems frantically busy and this year is no exception. We’ve been busy with quite a few activities lately and I figured I better get some pictures up for the grandparents or December will fly by.  Here’s some of the fun we’ve been up to.

On the first Sunday in December, we lit the Advent Candle at our church.   The four weeks leading up to Christmas are called the advent season in anticipation of the coming of the birth of Christ.  Our family was selected to light one of the four advent candles in each of the three services at church.  It made for a long Sunday morning but was a great time of togetherness for our family.   I realized that most Sundays we all go our separate ways and it was fun to worship and spend time together.   Of course we got all dressed up for the occasion. And I must say, the kids looked pretty darn cute.

Amazingly, it was a day when everyone got along and obeyed.  It was a Christmas miracle!  Everyone seemed to be in high spirits and enjoy being dolled up.

The following weekend was also a busy one — we went to a live nativity at Parkwood Baptist Church.

They set-up a “Bethlehem Walk” inside the church were we interacted with characters from the time of Jesus’ birth.

The kids enjoyed walking through the marketplace, learning about life and culture back then, as well as receiving little trinkets.    The highlight, of course, was when we exited the building and entered the manger scene.

The kids loved the animals.

And we saw baby Jesus!

Afterwards we got to come inside and enjoy cookies and punch.   We had a great time and Parkwood did an excellent job.

That same evening, Mike & I went out and got to see the National Philharmonic perform Handels Messiah at the Strathmore.  It was our first time at the Strathmore and we were wowed by the beautiful concert hall and the talented singers.

We also marveled at all the people assembled to listen to these talented singers proclaim the gospel.   It was a wonderful evening.

On Sunday, our older two children were in their own musical performance.  They participated in a Dickens inspired Christmas musical — it was so cute and fun to see them on stage!

Although Wendy was a little nervous to be on stage, she and all the kids did a great job.  We were so proud of them.

It’s been a wonderful advent season and despite the busyness, I have been loving all these special moments.

How is your family celebrating the advent season?
