Spot It: The perfect travel game

I bought the game, Spot It! on a whim for Christmas.   It has turned out to be a real winner and a great travel game.

Product Description (from Amazon):

There is always one, and only one, matching symbol between any 2 cards in this party game.  Spot it and you win!  A sharp eye and a little bit of speed is all it takes to become a Spot it! master.

How to Play:

The tin contains a deck of cards as well as instructions for 5 variations on the game.    Each card contains 8 images.   And every card has one (and only one) matching image with every other card.  The images may be different sizes, but there is always one match.    The games instructions included in the tin are variations of trying to find a match with the upward facing card and the card you have in your hand.

I’m intrigued by the logic of how every card has one match with every other card, and it makes for a really fun game.

What I Love:

  • Games are short — it doesn’t require an investment of hours, it can be played while waiting at the doctor’s office or the DMV.  There’s also enough varieties of game play that you can play for quite a while.
  • It’s compact — it easily fits in my purse or the kids backpack
  • It’s multi-age friendly — anyone, 3 and up can play.  Granted, my 3 year old isn’t nearly as good at it as the older ones, but he can still play.  It’s the kind of game that if you have a knack for recognizing patterns, a 5 year old can easily beat a grown-up.  It is as much fun for grown-ups as it is for kids!
  • It’s multi-player friendly — Spot It can easily be played with 2 to 8 players.  You can even play it solo.
  • It’s “educational” — according to the manufacturer description, Spot It “develops visual perception and matching skills. It supports quick mental processing and sharpens cognitive skills in a fun atmosphere.”
  • If you lose a card or two, it doesn’t ruin the game.   Some games (like Blokus) cannot be played if you lose a piece.   Spot It can be played even if a card gets lost.
  • The Tin — the sturdy tin helps keep the cards protected and together.
  • The price — currently listed for $11.29 at Amazon, this game won’t break the bank.

What I Don’t Love:

Honestly,  what’s not to love?   If anything, it would be that the circular cards are hard to shuffle.   Otherwise, there’s not much to complain about.  The fact that it has 62 reviews on Amazon and *all* of them are positive (either 4 or 5 stars) is pretty telling.

If you are looking for a game to bring your summer road trip, or just a new game to mix things up, I highly recommend this game!
