Lucky Number Seven

Our first born celebrated her 7th birthday today.  How did we get to be parents of a 7 year old?

Wendy is such a delight – we are so blessed to have her as our daughter.  Her cheerful attitude and beautiful heart make her a joy to be around.  We have loved watching her grow and develop.

We celebrated her birthday on Sunday with a pool party, but I’ll save that for another post.

Today we kept things low-key.  Mainly, I showered her with affection according to my love language:  food.

I got up early to make her favorite Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins before school.   We had decorated cookies for her to share with her class but forgot to bring them to the bus stop, so Adam and I decided to meet her (and Sam) for lunch in the cafeteria and to deliver her cookies.

It was fun to eat with her and her friends and then to watch her on the playground.  She loves hanging with the boys – especially a young man named J.

After school, we had the dinner she requested: chicken fajitas.   We still had half a cake left over from the birthday party, so I was loathe to make yet another dessert.  Instead, we opted for ice cream with homemade hot fudge sauce.   It was a challenge to fit 7 candles in her quickly melting dish, but we made it work.

Then, finally, it was present time.   I did not go all out this year (trying to keep costs down), so I wasn’t sure how well her gifts would be received.  The first one was a medieval princess costume I found at a thrift store around Halloween for $3.  She still enjoys dress-ups, so I thought she might enjoy this.

She liked it, but wasn’t blown away.  Then it was on to the next present.

The one request she had for her birthday was more art supplies.  I found a really cool art set with a ton of stuff at BJs.  It was only $12.99!

All 3 kids were duly impressed.   I also got her two Ed Emberly “How to Draw” books.

She and Sam wasted no time getting to work.

She declared it the Best. Present. Ever.

Seeing my two older kids work happily, quietly, side-by-side, I’m inclined to agree.

Happy Birthday, sweet girl – your beauty shines inside and out.
