Last week, guess who was designated the “Star of the Week” for his preschool class?
When you are the “Star”, the teachers put together a bulletin board with pictures from home and a worksheet filled out by the student. I had fun picking the photos and Sam had fun cutting them out (using my nifty slide cutter) and putting them in age order. His Star Worksheet is really cute. Some of the fun facts on it include:
* Our Family Likes to: play games like Blokus
* Things I Like to Do: watch movies like Lightening McQueen [Cars]
* Favorite Food: chicken nuggets
* Favorite Toy: Hoppy the Rabbit
* Favorite Story: Book of Trucks
* After School, I Like to: take naps
* I Have a Special Collection of: trains
* When I grow up, I want to be: a firefighter and a daddy
The privileges that come with being the Star of the Week include bringing a special toy and getting to have it out during the day (normally things from home stay in the backpack), picking a special book to be read by the teacher, and getting to “be the teacher” one morning during “Morning Meeting” (aka circle time).
As far as I knew, Sam doesn’t have a special toy, so I was curious to see what he would pick. He selected a small stuffed bunny that I had no idea was important to him, and he also listed it as his special toy on his sheet. The book he picked was something I recently picked up at a yard sale. I was endlessly amused to see that he liked to take naps. At four years old, he will still nap a couple of times a week. I love it, especially since his sister outgrew her naps by age three.
Another bonus was that Daddy came into read one morning. He brought the book “47 Beavers on the Big Blue Sea,” a cute book by Phil Visher based on Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, extolling the values of working together.
Sam was super excited to have Daddy there and of course, Daddy had the kids eating out of his hands in no time.
It was so cute to see my little guy so excited about being the Star. Thanks to his teachers, Ms. Stacey and Ms. Mary for making him feel like a super star!
