Of Sledding and Snow Shakes

Sunny, not too windy, and not so much snow that we couldn’t drive our minivan to the nearest bestest hill in our neighborhood. It took some effort to get all of the children into their snow gear and out the door, but finally, we made it to our destination (~1 mile away). Amazingly, everyone had a great time. There were a few spills, but mostly laughter and smiles.
It was Asher’s first time sledding, and he was up for the challenge. This, BTW, is the only photo that proves I was there.
The orange disc was a good ride, and it rode even better when Daddy rubbed wax from a tea light candle on the underside.
Asher had fun sledding with Dadddy. It was amazing they both fit on that little disc.
This mat was not a popular choice. It was hard to get on it.
And harder still for some to stay on it.
Despite the wipe-out, Silas still enjoyed his runs. As did Wesley.
The red sled was big enough for all three to go down together.
It was so fun to see them sledding together. And thankfully, there were no wipeouts involving Asher.
While our kids were having fun, check out the air mattress in the background. Talk about a party boat!
Daddy got a few more runs in. I did too, when I wasn’t playing photographer. (Hey look! I’m in this photo too!)
Finally, Asher had enough and said it was time to go.
He and I hung out in the car while the big kids squeezed in a few more runs. While we were waiting, I noticed this pretty woodpecker on a nearby tree.
It was worth the blood, sweat and tears of getting everyone out of the house.
After we got home, we decided to make “Snow Shakes” for our afternoon snack. I remember making them as a kid, and my kids were excited to make them again. Here’s our recipe:
Here’s how we make our version of snow shakes:
- Get clean(!) snow – preferably non-tramped in and certainly not yellow.
- Pack it into a cup, or five.
- Add milk, sugar, and vanilla to taste.
- Stir it as best you can.
- Enjoy!

BTW – if you have any flavored syrups, they can make a tasty addition. We tried peppermint, which was okay. But the raspberry syrup I had was surprisingly delicious. It tasted like a snow-cone!
