Now THAT’s how you fill a bucket

Wendy’s school is piloting an anti-bullying program.  One of the way ways the program is manifested in her kindergarten class is by using the book “How Full is Your Bucket?”  The book explains that everyone has an invisible bucket over their head and we can either fill others buckets by showing them kindness with our words and actions, or we can empty their bucket by treating them unkindly.   Her teacher read the book at the beginning of the school year, and each week, one child is designated as the official class “bucket filler”.  Every day, during “Morning Meeting” (aka circle time), the bucket filler gets to offer the class a word of encouragement or exhortation.  Wendy tells me that kids say things like, “I hope everybody has a good day.”

Today, Wendy told me it was finally her turn to be bucket filler.  She’s been waiting forever.  I asked her what she said to fill everyone’s bucket and she said, “I hope everyone knows about Jesus”.  I asked what her teacher’s said and she said they said, “Thank you.”

She gets to be the bucket filler for the whole week and she told me that tomorrow she wants to say “I hope everybody knows that Jesus loves them very much.”

I would love to be a fly on the wall in her classroom.  🙂

Lately, she has really been working through what it means to be a Christian and comprehending what Jesus did for us.  It’s been exciting to see her excitement about Him, and especially to see her concern for sharing it with her friends.  We are so proud of her and are praying for her protection and for her love of Jesus to be contagious.

I hope the public schools are ready for our little missionary 🙂

I remember once when Cindy E. told me to stay in public schools. And yes, I encountered kids like Wendy and I let them rip!
