Mommy Daughter Date Day

Since Wendy has been in kindergarten for a month, I wanted to spend a little one-on-one time with her.  So Saturday, I took her out for a mommy daughter date.   She knew we were going to do something together, but didn’t know what.  I took her to the mall, and as we entered the parking garage, she asked if we could park on the top level (for some reason, my kids always want to go up to the top).  I smiled and said “Sure.”  We parked in front of the Kettler Ice Rink and I pointed out all the people standing outside the players entrance/exit.  “They’re waiting to see some professional athletes” I told her.   “What kind?” she wondered.  “I’ll tell you when we get inside.”

We had just missed another Caps practice, but that was okay, we were here for the free skate.  We did peek in on the hockey rink and watched a few Caps players spend a little extra time on the ice.  I told her we were going ice skating today.   She was excited, but mostly remarked about how cold it was.

Before our skate session, we went down to the mall to get a bite to eat.   I decided to try Noodles & Company, a place that I’d heard good things about but never been.   Wendy opted for the mac & cheese and I tried the Bangkok curry with shrimp.   She received an activity book with crayons and had fun coloring while waiting for the food.

The wait was short and the food was delicious.  Wendy was so cute.  When the manager asked how everything was, she said, “Thank you.  My mac ‘n cheese is SO good!”

I grabbed some chopsticks and she had fun trying them for the first time.   This picture was before I discovered the clever little chopstick helper attachment they had.  I have to say, she did a great job with them!

After a yummy lunch, we headed back up to the rink to try our hand at ice skating.   I haven’t been in forever (pre-kids? pre-college?… I really can’t remember).  I wanted to take her ice skating, because I’m considering having her birthday there and wanted to make sure she liked it.   We laced up and headed out out on the rink.   It was slow going, but Wendy had a lot of fun.

We did a lot of wall hugging, although I also helped her skate by holding her hands and helping support her.    That was good for increasing our travel time, but bad for killing my back!  We only had a few falls and Wendy really loved it.   She even started getting sassy at the end, practicing a few poses :)

By the end of our time, she had really progressed.   While she can’t yet make it around the ice unassisted, she came a long way in gaining her balance and being comfortable on skates.   I really enjoyed spending this time with her.

After our session, we went back down to the mall to eat… ice cream!   We shared a scoop from Cold Stone and enjoyed a little more mommy – daughter bonding time.  It was a great day to spend with my #1 girl!
