The Great New England Adventure … Part I

Saturday August 29, 2009

We’ve been back a week, so I guess it’s time to start blogging about it.  Considering I have over 200 pictures (and those are just the keepers), it’s a little overwhelming.

We spent a week in New England – 2 and a half days in New Hampshire and then the rest of the week in Maine.

Our drive North was slated to take 10.5 hours of driving (not counting stops), so we got on the road before 5am.   We made great progress, stopping only a few times.   Around 1pm, we were getting desparate for a good stopping point for lunch.   In an attempt to be economical, I packed lunches for us and wanted nothing more than a rest area with picnic tables and bathrooms.   But along I-495 (around outer Boston), there was none to be found.   Eventually we took an exit and hoped for the best.  We stumbled across a McDonalds with a giant play structure, so that worked out okay for us.

We finally arrived in North Conway, NH around 4:30pm.    We were staying at the Merrill Farm Resort, which I selected after doing research on  Trip Advisor.

I was very happy with our accommodations – it’s an old property with a historic feel to it.  The grounds are beautiful and they have a continental breakfast featuring yummy homemade muffins.  In the afternoon, they serve fresh baked cookies.  Yum!  The main reason I picked it is because they had loft style rooms.  Our actual room was comprised of two levels – an upstairs with two double beds and ample room for the pack n’ play.  It was wonderful to be able to put the kids to bed and still be awake and talking in our area.

Since we arrived in the late afternoon, we explored the rooms and the grounds and then Mike took the kids to the pool, while I drove into North Conway to pick up dinner from Flatbread Pizza (their website is horrible, but the food is awesome).   We had a great time relaxing at the pool and even made friends with another family with youngs kids.

We wrapped up our day with showers and bed, eager to check out Storyland the next day….
