Before time slips away, I wanted to get a post in to talk about our wild & crazy Memorial Weekend.
We started out Saturday with a yard sale. Mike wanted to clear a bunch of crap out of basement, in the hopes that we might some day actually get it finished. I just wanted to make a little pocket change and would have been thrilled if we made $200. We worked hard all week identifying items and tagging them, and then I ran around Thurs & Fri posting signage. Saturday was a beautiful warm sunny day and we had a TON of traffic. I couldn’t believe how many people came through. Stuff was selling well, and by 11:30, I was ready to call it quits and tally up. When I counted out the earnings, I couldn’t believe it – we made a little over $400!! The kids also ran a lemonade & treat stand, and they netted $18! (I didn’t make them pay me back for the start-up fees, nor did I charge rent for their stand
). Here’s the pics from Saturday:
By noon, very little was left and most of it went out on the curb for freebies.
So that was Saturday. The rest of the day was quiet & uneventful. Sat night/Sun am; around 3:30 or so, Sam came into our room and asked why the water was running. Huh? Mike & I were groggy for a second, then he lept out of bed (and I stumbled after him). The upstairs bathroom, outside the kids room was OVERFLOWING with water. Like up to your ankles, seeping down to the mudroom/powder room below overflowing. Mike quickly figured out the toilet had somehow broke and turned off the water to the toilet. Then we spent the next hour or using towels and the shop-vac to try and mop up the mess. Somewhere around 4am, I queried whether there was any point in calling our home owners insurance at this hour. Mike said why not, so I placed the call to USAA. Got through to someone on the phone who assigned it to an adjuster and said she’d be back in the office Monday morning. I said I don’t think we can wait that long to deal with this … so he said, “Let me try and find a contractor in your area.” A few minutes later, a contractor called us and said they’d be out first thing in the morning. They arrived by 8:30am, and by the time I brought the kids home from church, most of the drywall had been ripped out from our mudroom and giant fans and humidifiers were running in the problem areas. Did I mention we have a $500 deductible? So much for that yardsale profit.. Here’s the pictures from this mess
this is our downstairs mudroom, directly beneath the leaky toilet. Here mike is attempt to shop vac up the mess, while I flit around uselessly.
basically, the whole ceiling was soaked – the floor of the mudroom was totally covered, seeping down into our basement below.
The water damage guys arrived by 8:30 that morning (thanks to USAA) and got to work ripping out the drywall.
this is the bathroom where all the trouble began. it looks okay right now, but they’ll come back and evaluate after 3 days with the fans.
The third major activity occurred on Sunday, when our neighborhood hosted it’s annual block party. But I’ll save that for another post…

Wow, that is amazing you made 400 dollars at the yard sale! How fun to clean out stuff and make money for it:) I am so sorry to hear about the broken toilet mess.I have been keeping you in my prayers. Monica
ps- I love your blog!
$400 from a yard sale sounds great. I hope you hadn’t made any grand plans on spending it.
I am glad Sam woke you up and let you know what was going on. USAA is a great insurance company. Someone hit my car in the parking lot at work a couple of years ago and I was thrilled they had USAA. Everything was taken care of quickly and smoothly.
