I am in purge mode, and with a yard sale looming, I’ve been scouring cabinets and drawers, basically doing my own version of Clean Sweep. One of the long lost treasures I came across was hiding in an old cassette tape case. Inside, I found old mix tapes I made back in my college days, dating as far back as 1992! I’ve been having fun looking them over and I can’t bring myself to just chuck them.
So… I decided to list the songs for posterity here on my blog so that if I ever want to recreate them w/MP3s, I’ll have a record.
Let’s start with …
Study / Study Break Mix
Spring 1992 – Gooch
I’m pretty sure I worked on this when I should have been studying for finals my freshman year at William & Mary. Side A is the “Study Mix” aka mellow stuff and Side B was for my “Study Break”. Considering the grades I got, I’m guessing the B track got more play ![]()
Side A
- Puff the Magic Dragon – Peter, Paul & Mary
- Carolina in my Mind – James Taylor
- Desperado – Eagles
- And So It Goes – Billy Joel
- I Can’t Make You Love Me – Bonnie Raitt
- Danny’s Song – Anne Murray
- It Had to Be You – Harry Connick, Jr.
- Peaceful Easy Feeling – Eagles
- Unanswered Prayers – Garth Brooks
- Sweet Baby James – James Taylor
- Walk on the Ocean – Toad the Wet Sprocket
- Tequila Sunrise – Eagles
- I’d Like to Buy the World a Coke (commercial)
Side B
- I Got You (I Feel Good) – James Brown
- Iko Iko – Dixie Cups
- Sweet Home Alabama – Lynyrd Skynyrd
- Lay Down Sally – Eric Clapton
- Straight to Hell – Drivin’ ‘n Cryin’
- All the Wrong Reasons – Tom Petty
- The Gambler – Kenny Rodgers
- 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover – Paul Simon
- Hit the Road, Jack – Ray Charles
- The Hardest Game – Havana 3 a.m.
- Swamp Music - Lynyrd Skynyrd
- Two of A Kind (working on a Full House) – Garth Brooks
- Lucille – Kenny Rogers
Oh man I had fun reliving those songs. If you happen to be interested in any of them, you can buy them here.
So .. do you have any mix tapes lying around? What songs take you back?

Oh my word–this is great! Being as anti-clutter as I am, I’m pretty sure my mixed tapes are gone for good. But I do remember a tape Larry made for me in HS while we were “broken up” that included Sinead O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares”. That one always takes me back!
In college I was really into The Dead, Jimmy Buffet, The Cure, The Stones, and alternative rock. I don’t listen to that any more but when I hear one of “my songs” out in the mall or in a restaurant, it really takes me back.
