Birthday Parties Gone to the Dogs

Birthdays tend to be big “to dos” around our house and usually involve a fancy cake (that I slave over) tied to whatever the birthday theme happens to be (thus far there’s been a monkey, ladybug, and butterfly, just to name a few).

So, on Friday, I mentioned to Wendy that it was Logan’s birthday.  Our “first born” turned the ripe old age of 8.  I took a picture of all the kids to commemorate it the occasion.

For Wendy however, a picture wasn’t enough and she started clamoring for a birthday cake.  Because every dog deserves his day.  And his day should include cake, or so she thought.  I kind of poo poo’ed the idea and let it drop.   She however, did not let it drop.   After begging for a cake for four days, she finally wore me down and I agreed to make on this afternoon, with her assistance.

I knew Wendy had her heart set on a chocolate cake, but I pointed out that chocolate isn’t good for dogs.  So I asked her if I should make a cake out of dog food.  She mulled that one over for a few minutes and decided I should make TWO cakes, one for Logan, and a chocolate one for us.  “I know!” she said.  “The chocolate one can be for you, for Mother’s Day!”  I quickly set her straight and let her know the unwritten rule that mothers cannot, should not, and will not bake their own cakes for Mother’s Day.

Setting all that aside, I broke open the Duncan Hines box o’ yellow cake and we began to mix our masterpiece.  I had in mind that it WOULD be a chocolate cake (despite the fact that the dog shouldn’t eat it and despite my claim that it wasn’t a “Mother’s Day cake” — like my DD, if I’m having cake, there needs to be some chocolate to it!).   After finding no chocolate frosting in the pantry (and knocking and spilling a container of syrup in the process…) I whipped up a homemade batch and attempted to frost my “masterpiece”.

Thank goodness it was just “for the dog” because my cake got stuck in the pan and was turning out to be a hot mess.  I was glad there was no company invited to this shindig, because our “dog cake” was a sad affair.  Wendy was even a little disappointed that it didn’t look a dog when it was all said and done.  In all, it worked out tho.  I deemed the part of the cake that was stuck in the pan was “good enough for the dog”, so he got the sloppy seconds while we feasted on his cake.   Enjoy the rest of the “party pics”:
