Breakfast of Champions

Thursday February 26, 2009

This morning, Sam and I were enjoying a leisurely shopping spree outing at Tar-jay.  While browsing the cereal aisle, he spotted many enticing boxes and begged me to buy them.  Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Cocoa Puffs and Fruity Pebbles were among the boxes that caught his eye.

Being a nutrition-minded momma (for my kids, at least…), I refused. “I’m not buying those.  They’re junk.”

“But they’re CEREAL, momma!” He implored.

I replied, “Yes, but that doesn’t mean it’s healthy. ”

I thought I had won the round and put the discussion to bed  when he pulled out one last ace.

“But, momma,”  he reasoned, “Mr. Randy eats it!”

Me:  “Eats what?”

And he pointed right at that box of Fruity Pebbles, at which point I burst out laughing.

Mr. Randy, dear readers, is  a good friend from college.  A 35 year old father and husband who loves ultimate frisbee, mountain biking … and Fruity Pebbles.

We spent the weekend over New Years with Randy, his wife and some other friends and apparently Mr. Randy’s breakfast preference had made an impression on my three year old.

So watch what you eat, friends.  Because you never know who is watching you 🙂

ps – I wasn’t sure which weekend Sam remembered this from (it would have been impressive if he had remembered from our visit last July 4th), so I asked him where he saw Mr. Randy eat it.  Sam said, “You know, momma.  The place with the deer.” And I laughed again, because that is how he identified our New Years trip – the cabin in Front Royal where the neighbors had rescued and domesticated a deer, which roamed the hills with a bell on his neck (alas, I didn’t get a picture!).

pps – the picture above has nothing to do with anything, except to show what a crazy child I have.

Cute post. And scary too. They pick up and remember WAY too much. And the whole time I’m reading this, I’m wondering how the picture is going to play into the story. So thanks for the clarification at the end. Totally cute pic, btw. The bow is a nice touch. 🙂
