The Waiting Game Continues … and the Baby Pool Begins!

Monday January 14, 2008

TMI Alert — anyone looking for just the facts, without any gory details can stop reading now, or jump to the baby pool. Baby Gonzo is still resting comfortably, not demonstrating any measurable desire to do a kick turn and swim to the light…

Men, consider yourselves warned….

It’s funny how the end of pregnancy can make you want the most ridiculous of things. Now that I am ready (oh so ready) for this baby to be out, I find myself trying to will myself to have contractions — as if I had any control.

I’ve been having contractions on and off since New Year’s Eve, but it’s never been sustained or prolonged. Now if you’ve never experienced labor, you might not know what contractions feel like it. I always pictured it as a tightening around my stomach, but that’s not really it at all. It really feels like low menstral cramps – which is not a feeling I would NOT welcome any other time in my life. But lately, I’ll have one or two crampy sensations and I’ll get excited and think… “Come on body.. keep it up! Let this be the real deal!” But alas, they fade away before presenting any discernible pattern.

Another frequent sign of impending labor is … ahem … “the runs.” It’s kinda like your body starts to clear itself out to get ready for the business of labor. I experienced this both times with my previous pregnancies, and have been having a touch of the big “D” on and off these past few weeks. Again, every time it starts to happen, I get excited … but alas … no baby has followed. I’m not going to even discuss my excitement over any sign of discharge or my bizarre desire that my water would break at some inopportune time (better in public than in my bed … I say).

So, I continue to sit here and wonder why Baby Gonzo is making me wait. Is he going to be an obstinate child? Refusing to follow directions and taxing my patience at every turn? Or is he going to be a sweet snuggler who wants nothing more than to keep his head close to my heart and never leave the safety of my arms?

I have to be fair and admit I’m not even due for another six days, so really, I should have a little more patience. However, since Wendy & Sam had already arrived by now (15 days and 9 days early, respectively), I’m wondering what the hold-up is.

To help pass the time, how bout making a guess at Baby Gonzo’s stats. Leave a comment with your best guess for:

  • Date & Time of arrival
  • Weight & length
  • Final method of delivery
  • Baby Gonzo’s real name

I’ll try and think of some fabulous prize for whomever comes closest… tho it might be nothing better than an slightly soiled spitty cloth…
